How to rip Blu ray to MKV format for free? You’ve come to the right place! I looked at two programs that convert Blu ray movies into mkv video format for Windows(7). I found a free open-source program called AVGO Medio recoder that would rip partly Blu ray on a PC. I also found a program called Pavtube Blu ray ripper that converts Any Blu ray into MKV format. It also works great on Windows 7, and guarantee audio and video in sync/3X faster with CUDA acceleration.
Using AVGO Medio recorder was as easy as plugging in my Blu ray, selecting the Blu ray in AVGO Media recorder, and clicking a button to kick off the conversion process.
I used a regular Blu ray disc ‘Ice Age’ and tried it on AVGO Medio recorder. It took a whopping 4 hours to rip the disc and convert it into MKV format, which seemed like an eternity. But when I used The “Toy story 3″- one of my new purchased Blu ray disc – and tried it on, The AVGO Medio recorder wouldn’t even start the conversion though, complaining that the Disc was copyright protected …
The AVGO Media recorder user interface was also hard to figure out. It has so many options to configure, that I found it difficult to figure out where to start. However, if you just rip Blu ray now and then or have no special requirements like editing, adjust parameter for Blu ray Movies. AVGO Medio recorder is quite qualified for Rip Blu ray to mkv as an Blu ray to Mkv converter freeware.
Pavtube Blu ray ripper was able to rip both Blu-ray discs and standard DVDs to my required HD or SD media formats very fast – it only took about an hour and a half to rip a Blu ray disc on my Windows 7, with high level of quality and a small video output file (which will take up less space on my hard drive).

I used VLC player to view the resulting video and was pretty impressed with both the video and sound quality. I was just using the default settings, and it would have looked even better if I had set it to the highest quality conversion setting.
Additionally, If you would like to maintain best quality, just back to the format list and move down your mouse to point at “HD Video”, here you can find “MKV HD Video”.Check it and hit on the small folder icon to specify an output folder. Then click “Settings” and customize advanced audio and video parameters. For instance, you may set Video to 1920*1080p (to fit for the wide screen), 25mbps, 30fps, and Audio to AC3/AAC codec, 192kbps, 5.1 channels. Click “OK” to confirm your settings.
